Public speaking and workshops

Thomas Øvlisen is a Danish artist working primarily in painting and sculpture. He is trained in both painting and art history. He has exhibited internationally for over 25 years, with a number of successful institutional shows.

He is an artist's artist. In the 2000s he was named among the most important emerging talents, and at 39 he was, according to the art database Artsy, the most in-demand Danish artist under 40. Most people know Jeppe Hein or FOS (Thomas Poulsen), but not Thomas Øvlisen — because the artist's artist tends to fly under the radar and is most often known only to other artists. In Øvlisen's case, that's by design. His practice is fundamentally concerned with redefining the value chains that feed into art, and he deliberately works around the mechanisms the art radar picks up. That position is also the starting point for his talks.

Understanding Art.

Drawing on his experience and training, he outlines the premises for understanding art. A look back across 500 years of art history, a walkthrough of the methodologies of art analysis, and a thorough introduction to the formal language and structure of painting together form the basis for developing your own understanding of art.

Øvlisen works to connect art with people, and people with art by bridging to of the biggest gaps language and price. In his talks you get an informed view of the market forces shaping art, an understanding of where and what kind of value is created — and by whom — and the confidence to put your own words on your own experience of art and that way enhance your own experience.

We all encounter art every day; whether you arrive with prior knowledge or interest makes no difference. After an hour with Thomas Øvlisen, a visit to a gallery or museum will never feel the same again.
